Second Chances and Do Overs

God is not the God of second chances. God is the God of many chances, of many opportunities. God is continually willing to give us another opportunity to make things right with him.

If we look at the life of Moses and the children of Israel we find a history of failure and restoration.

God on many occasions is ready to destroy the children of Israel but time and again he gives them another opportunity because he loves them. The same is true for Moses.

The Bible is filled with people who were given opportunity after opportunity.

Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden but God gave them another chance.

Noah got drunk after the Ark landed but God was not through with him.

David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband murdered, yet was a man after God’s own heart.

The Apostle Peter’s denied Jesus three times.  Yet he was restored and was later used to lead over 3000 people to Christ on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41).

Maybe you feel like the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-22). The prodigal son lost his inheritance but finally decided to repent and go home. As he neared his home his father was looking for him (20) and his father came running (20) to him. Not to tell him off but to embrace him, to restore him. This is a picture of our heavenly father – a God who longs for us to return home. A God who runs to us.

Is it ever too late? No.

While there is breath there is the opportunity to make it right. Jesus forgave the thief while dying on the cross and promised the thief that he would be with Him in Paradise (Like 23:40-42). Jesus did not chew him out because he had waited so late – he simply forgave him.
